Livelihood support through MAPs (Medicinal and aromatic plants) conservation and cultivation.
Nepal is geographically remote, hilly and mountain country in south Asia between China in the North and India in the south where the extreme poverty ratio increased day by day due to harsh climate, tough topography and limited option to support their livelihood in the Himalayas. So that, HEED Nepals task has been started focusing remote people in the Himalaya teaching them to cultivate medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in the remote mountain areas with the support of The Mountain Institute (TMI, Nepal based Asia regional office since 2009 to reduce poverty and extreme increased migration to the urban areas through a project improving livelihoods through Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) production and conservation in the wild and teaching them to sell in the market. The culturally early collection has been stopped after the project taught them harvesting time. The climate change in the Himalaya region could be a reason of destroying the high land MAPs species and trees as well as bushes.
The agro enterprises enable the people to earn more money which meet their basic needs and able to pay the childrens school fees and minimum treatments. The project has been started in the 7 VDCs in Dhading District in early 2009. These program endorsed in the remote mountain of Dhading in Ganesh Himal region. The village of Lapa, Tipling, Sertung, Jharlang, Ri gaon, dharkha and Baseri habitant at 1132 to the 4000 meters requires about 3-5 days walk from nearest road of district head quarter and pabil Himal at 7052m requires 3 weeks to 8 weeks for trekking, walking and expedition. In Early 2014, HEED again able to endorse the program in Gorkha districts which covers two Village development committee (VDCs) Manbu and kasigan. Similarly the trails leads to Patle kharka of Manbu VDC of Gorkha district takes one to two days walk from the nearest road or Arughat Bazar. The Manaslu and Tsum treks start from Arughat. The alleviation of Gorkha District starts from 700m to 8163m, the Mt. Manaslu which is popular in Nepal for Herbal plants. In another word, more than 1000 types flora and fauna are available with 300 species of herbs in both land and on trees.
